Category Description:

Welsh novelist, short story writer, and playwright; he wrote in English strongly influenced by Welsh syntax and vocabulary. Born in 1878, died 1945.

His portrayal of the brutal realities of poverty in west Wales made him, for many years, the most hated man in Wales; his reputation has been somewhat rehabilitated since his books were reprinted in the 1990s.
