Poet and children's writer, and Poet Laureate from 1984 until his death. Born in Mytholmroyd, West Yorkshire, in 1930, died in Devon in 1998.

Hughes was married to the American poet, Sylvia Plath, from 1956 until they separated in 1962; she committed suicide in 1963.
