As the Free Church of Scotland prepared for the unification in 1900 with the United Presbyterian Church, a small group of ministers mainly in the Highlands broke away in 1893 in order to preserve orthodoxy.
The church retains a strong presence in some parts of the Highlands and Hebrides, where their distinctive features remain stricter observation of the Sabbath and exclusive use of the King James Bible.
It also has congregations in Zambia, New Zealand, and Australia.
Colloquially known as the "Wee Wee Frees".
