The next layers in English football competition (below the four elite divisions of English football - the Premier League, and the three divisions in the Football League) consists of seven steps.
It is known as the National League System, comes under the jurisdiction of The Football Association, and consists of:-
- Football Conference (steps 1 and 2); - Three regional Leagues (Isthmian, Northern Premier, and Southern), each managing two layers of competition (steps 3 and 4); - A group of "feeder" regional leagues, for smaller areas (steps 5 and 6); - And a large number of more localised leagues, again "feeders" for higher steps; most of these leagues have several divisions themselves, but only their highest division is considered part of the National League System, at step 7.
