For a century, England and Scotland had been technically independent but had shared the same monarch on one throne. - England had concerns that an independent Scotland could still choose a different king and even enter into alliances against England. - Scotland was suffering the economic consequences of the disastrous collapse of the Darien Scheme, and the political elite were looking for a way to recover their wealth. Against this background, a commission was drawn from both countries. They negotiated the Treaty of Union (1706) and the passage of Acts of Union through the Parliaments of England and Scotland, to formally unite the Crowns and Parliaments. While generally popular in England, Robert Burns' song, "Such A Parcel Of Rogues In A Nation", reflects widespread public anger at Scotland's loss of autonomy, and the way the country's political elite had sought and received "financial encouragement" to support the union.
