Covenanters

Find the top Covenanters websites and businesses with reviews and ratings.

In the early 17th century, the Stuart Kings James I and Charles I attempted to bring the churches of England and Scotland closer together. Charles I attempted to replace foundation documents of the Church of Scotland prepared by John Knox, with new sets of clerical rules, church governance, and orders of worship prepared by Archbishop Laud, a High Church Anglican. Popular fears that this would constituted a return to Catholicism led to the preparation of "The National Covenant", signed in Greyfriars Kirk in 1638. Scottish popular opposition to the "divine right of kings" led to a period of sustained conflict in Scotland, between the Presbyterian Covenanter movement and the government forces of the Stuart Kings - Killing Times. The situation also helped precipitate war in England (the "English Civil War") and Ireland - not resolved until the 1688 "Glorious Revolution", the invasion of William of Orange, and the collapse of the Stuart dynasty.
